Chris Banks, a candidate for City Council in Brooklyn’s 42nd District (ENY, Brownsville, Canarsie, East Flatbush), has received a powerful endorsement from DC37, the largest public sector union in New York City. This is a significant boost to his campaign and comes on the heels of major endorsements from the Carpenters Union and the Hotel Trades Union.

Banks is a lifelong resident of Brooklyn and has a long history of working with labor unions and community organizations. He is a strong advocate for working families and has pledged to fight for good jobs, affordable housing, and quality education. With the support of DC37, other labor unions, and the local community, Banks is well-positioned to become the next City Council member in East New York.

DC37 is a powerful force in New York City politics. With over 150,000 members, representing 1,000 job titles and 61 active locals, the union has a strong voice in the city’s government. DC37’s members work in a wide range of sectors, including hospitals, schools, libraries, social service centers, and city colleges. These individuals play a vital role in providing essential services to the public and ensuring the smooth functioning of the city. The union’s endorsement of Chris Banks is a major coup for his campaign. It shows that Banks has the support of a powerful group of workers who are committed to making a difference in their city.

Henry Garrido, Executive Director of District Council 37, expressed his confidence in Banks, stating,

“Chris has proven himself as a thoughtful and powerful advocate. He is an emerging leader who is responsive to his community’s needs and will represent the best interests of Brooklyn’s working families. DC37 is proud to endorse Chris Banks for City Council District 42.”

The fact that Banks is receiving support from major unions that represent members of his community, over incumbent, Charles Barron, is a telling sign that change might be coming to East New York. Barron has been an elected politician in either the State Assembly or City Council for over two decades. Banks says he is running on the idea of creating partnerships and moving the community forward.

Reacting to the endorsement, Chris Banks expressed humility and gratitude, recognizing the significance of DC37’s support.

“To receive the endorsement of DC37 and its members is humbling. I’ve been advocating for my community for years, so to have the support of the largest public sector union shows that the work has not been in vain,” Banks remarked.

By engaging with many members of DC37 who reside in District 42, Banks has developed a profound understanding of their concerns and aspirations. He has vowed to take a firm stance to address the issues raised as a legislative member of the City Council, making sure that as the voice of the hardworking individuals he represents, he helps them be heard and works his best to protect their interests.

Acknowledging the pivotal role played by unions in safeguarding the rights of the workers, Banks stressed that, “It’s important that hardworking members of our community are protected and represented by unions. Fair wages and fair labor practices are essential to maintain a thriving middle class in our community. I have been standing with DC37 members for years, and I will continue to stand with them in the City Council, advocating for their rights through the legislative process.”

The endorsement from DC37 showcases his ability to unite diverse stakeholders and bridge gaps within the community. With the support of DC37, Banks demonstrates his capacity to build strong alliances and drive positive change.
